Theo Van Hoytema

  Theodorus ("Theo") van Hoytema was born on December 18, 1863 in The Hague. He died on August 28, 1917, The Hague. Lived and worked in Leiden, Delft, Amsterdam, Rijswijk (South Holland) 1890-1891, Loosduinen until 1894, Voorburg until 1898, Hilversum after 1898, Amsterdam, London 1905, Rijngeest 1905-1906, Voorburg, The Hague (temporary Texel ). Van Hoytema studied at the Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of Fine Arts) in The Hague. He was a painter but also a watercolourist, engraver and draftsman, specializing in animals and plants. He was an accomplished bird draughtsman and lithographer. He was a member of the Amsterdam artistic society “Arti et Amicitae”. He taught E.H.J. van Eysinga, A.E. Humalda van Eysinga, M. Cramer, Th. Edward & Charles Detmold

  Edward Julius Detmold (21 November 1883 Putney, Wandsworth, Surrey – 1 July 1957 Montgomery) and his twin brother Charles Maurice Detmold (1883-1908) were prolific Victorian and early twentieth-century book illustrators. Their parents were Edward Detmold and Mary Agnes Luck. Their father, an electrical engineer, was absent for much of their childhood, and they lived with their uncle and tutor, Dr. Edward Barton Shuldham, who taught them and was a noted collector of porcelain and Japanese woodcuts of plants and animals. Dr Shuldham occupied a house in Upper Richmond Road, Putney, where the twins were born. It ensured their interest in natural history and art and created a nurturing environment for their precocious talents. They also spent time with another uncle, the painter Henry E. Detmold, who encouraged them in their art.
