Gurihiru

Gurihiru (Japanese: グリヒル ), also credited as Illustrator Unit Gurihiru and Gurihiru Studios, is a Japanese illustration team, consisting of Chifuyu Sasaki (workplan design, pencils, inks) and Naoko Kawano (workplan design, colors, webdesign). Both originating from Sapporo, Japan, they are currently based in Saitama, mainly working as artists for American comics. The two women are art school graduates who worked as web designers and art museum receptionists prior to their work in comics. After winning 2nd place in a manga competition, they were advised by the organizer of the contest that their art style didn't fit the Japanese market. They decided to try the American market and have since illustrated many American comics and graphic novels.

Wamizu has started to draw since he was little under influence of art loving parents. While friends around were drawing cartoon characters, the little Wamizu enjoyed to draw scenery and often made a completed piece of illustration. While he was affected by numerous artists, he has developed his own style which is line drawing with a pencil and finishing with watercolor.

Shie Nanahara

Shie Nanahara is an artist of strange ideas who has worked on numerous game illustrations, including “Samurai Warriors 5” and “Magic: The Gathering”. Bold and precise, brilliant and robust, this large-format collection includes Nanahara's lifework, the "Nenokuni Sokonohate" series. A new caricature of “gods,” “humans,” and “Narenohate” unfolds in an island nation in the Far East, a place where this shore and the other shore are in transition. She is known for her gorgeous Asian-influenced art, which is so full of amazing scenery it can be hard to take it all in. This photobook has hundreds of illustrations, hand selected by the artist, showing her incredible creations over the years. We especially love the way the artist uses Chinese imagery to create incredible scenes and characters.

Toridamono

Toridamono has an amazing sense of color, with a set of work that varies from colorful and fun to epic and (somewhat) dark while still maintaining a full pallet of colors. It seems that more recently, Japanese artists have been experimenting with an added level of color, using colors not normally used in a piece while still maintaining a level of depth and detail seen with a more limited color selection. The particular piece above initially caught my attention with it's unique armor design, giving life to an object that normally would be nothing more than accessory, much like the rest of Toridamono's work.
