André Hellé, pseudonym of André Laclôtre, is a French painter and decorator, illustrator, lithographer and creator of very innovative toys, born March 26, 1871 in Paris where he died December 29, 1945.
During the 1890s, André Laclôtre, who had lived in Boissy-Saint-Léger since his childhood, was close to the Arts incohérents, signing cartoons under his name.
He took the pseudonym of André Hellé around 1896 when he began to publish drawings and comic strips in illustrated periodicals. Much in demand, his contributions were very numerous and lasted until the 1930s.
As early as 1910, he created models of wooden toys of an innovative form, and produced a series called "Noah's Ark". He received, for his toys, the gold medal and the honorary diploma from the Society for the Encouragement of Art and Industry.
In 1913, he wrote a ballet libretto for Claude Debussy, La Boîte à joujoux, for which he also illustrated the original score.
